Mahara Place is the heart of Waikanae Village. It hosts a great range of shops and anemnities and also has remarkable gardens, a serene scupltured water feature and a small childrens playground. Future features will include Maumahara : Remember by leading Maori artist, Robyn Kahukiwa. Mahara is the district's public gallery for the Kapiti Coast. All are welcome and entry to Mahara Gallery is free.

A natural paradise and nationally protected marine and wildelife reserve, Kapiti Island is one of the nature coasts biggest drawcards. Kapiti Island Nature Tours offer both day trips and overnight excursions. These offer a wide range of native flora and fauna to explore.

The Lindale Center offers a wide range of specialty shops including, a cafe, a restaurant, the Artel Gallery which showcases works from many local creatives and and an authentic rural farm experience. Located just north of Paraparaumu, the center often hosts events including a regular Saturday & Sunday market and the Sunday Carboots Sale. In 2011, Lindale is intending to establish a major Butterfly Farm.
Kapiti Tenpin is just north of Paraparaumu and is the only Tenpin Bowling centre between Porirua and Palmerston North. They have 14 fully automatic lanes with a computerised scoring system. Bring a group from work or come along with family or friends, Kapiti Tenpin Bowling is great family fun.
Get ready for a unique 'hands-on' wildlife experience. Nga Manu offers a variety of tour packages and easily accessed walkways. Visitors can feed many kinds of native birds including Tui, Kiwi and can even meet the prehistoric native lizard, the Tuatara.
Reikorangi is a small community inland from Waikanae and is the home of Reikorangi Pottery and Cafe. The area is also home to an interactive farm park making for an ideal family oriented nature destination.
The Kapiti coast is both scenic and serene and Waikanae is no exception. For families there are many swimming and picknicking areas available and the beaches are all easily accessible. The area also boasts excellent fishing and whitebaiting locations along with some beautiful walking and biking tracks. The Department of Conservation has plenty of information regarding tracks and you can contact Kapiti Bird Tours to book a guided tour of the estuary's birdlife . The tours are part of the Nature Coast Bird Trail which features a stunning array of native wildlife.
